In 1985, Tampa City Hospital accepts its first HIV/AIDS patient Matthew Mercer. There is limited knowledge about the disease so thoracic surgeon Dr. Laura Nelson struggles with providing her patient with the best treatment.

At the same time that Dr. Nelson works her first HIV/AIDS case, ex-Keystone Pharma infectious disease researcher Victor Worth learns that he is Matthew’s father and that the pharmaceutical firm where he previously worked rejected testing a drug that might save his son’s life. Irate Victor decides to experiment on Tampa City Hospital patients while CDC researcher Charles Scarlett, working for the Order white supremacist group, deploys flesh-eating bacteria on HIV/AIDS sufferers.

The third Dr. Laura Nelson medical thriller (see Shadow of Death and Twisted Justice) is an exciting tale that showcases the early awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The exciting storyline contains too many subplots (including several involving the heroine’s personal life as a single mom), but with a strong climax. Fans will enjoy the heroine’s examination of the shocking facts.
